Notes:

University High call numbers are based on DDC (non-fiction) and hybrid DDC (fiction, graphic novels, and biographical comic books). Assign a cutter typically for the author (except for biographical comic books). If a cutter is not established in Alma, use the regular Cutter table in the OCLC Dewey Cutter program. Perform shelflisting to ensure that call numbers file in the correct order. Use two letters to assign a workmark for the title, and perform shelflisting so that titles by the same author file alphabetically.

*Please add the location name "Univ. HS" to the upper right corner of the cataloger's page.

*Books with dust jackets should be given double barcodes and two call number labels.

NON-FICTION (includes Poetry)

  • University High School nonfiction is cataloged in the same manner as nonfiction for other libraries.  The only exception is that they are given the item status of  "Book 2".
    •  In the holding record, the first indicator for the 852 is 1.
    • Copy the Dewey Decimal call number from the 082 MARC field in the bibliographic record into the subfield h in the holding record.
    • Non-fiction books are typically cuttered by author and assigned a workmark for the first two letters of the title (or first group of letters that produces a unique cutter.)
    • Use the regular Cutter table in the OCLC Dewey Cutter program.
    • Add the cutter to the subfield i in the holding record.

    • Call number labels (that don't fit on the spine) should go on the "front" (with the spine to the right).
    • Pencil markings should go near the beginning of the work (opening the book with the spine to the right), with the call number in the upper-left hand corner and the departmental marking in the upper-right-hand corner of the page.

BIOGRAPHIES

Catalog biographies as below, except for biographies that are also comic books (see section on comic books above).

*Biographies were previously cataloged under the location "uhbiog," often with the call number "B." The correct method going forward is to catalog them under uhx with a Dewey number as per an email from Frances Jacobson Harris, Uni Librarian, from 05/29/14.
