The following local decisions have been made regarding use of LC Classification at Illinois. If a topic is not considered here, generally follow instructions elsewhere in this guide, in the LC Classification Schedules, and in the Cataloging and Shelflisting Manual.
Class bibliographies with their respective subject. Do not class in Z.
Class children's literature (not S-Collection material) by genre/nationality within the P schedules. Do not class in PZ.
Undergraduate Library: class all graphic novels under PN6720.
Uni High: Assign class GN and then Cutter for author/title (note: these are not classed as LC materials)
Other locations: class with respective subject.
When determining whether volumes of a set/series should be classed together or separately, make the determination based on the information in the bibliographic record and whether previous volumes have been classed together.
In 1982 LC began to add publication dates to the call numbers of monographic works. If cataloging a pre-1982 work that does not include publication date in the call number found in the 050/090 field, add it.
Due to changes in cataloging rules, the Cutter for a non-literary work may have changed if the main entry or form of the author's name has changed. In these cases, follow Cataloging and Shelflisting Manual G145 pt.3 and Cutter the new edition from the new form of the entry.
