How many MFHDs?

One MFHD, One Item

You need only one MFHD and one Item record when you have a single location.

One MFHD, Multiple Items

You need only one MFHD but more than one Item record any time there is more than one piece to barcode. This includes any time you have either of the following:

  1. More than one format in one location, or
  2. more than one volume in one location, or
  3. more than one copy in one location

Multiple MFHDs, Multiple Items

You need multiple MFHDs and multiple Item records when you have more than one location.

NOTE: The number of volumes does not affect the number of MFHDs. Every piece that has a barcode will require a separate Item record.
