IDEALS

This guide has information on how to deposit and access IDEALS materials for individuals and collection administrators.

Anyone may browse and search in IDEALS. See our guide to Finding Content in IDEALS for assistance. This page explains how to log into IDEALS for the first time and begin using the repository.

If you are a member University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign student body, faculty, or staff

You can log into IDEALS using just your NetID and password. This provides you access to any items restricted to users from the University of Illinois. You can see your submissions, completed and in-progress, as well as the collections you have permission to submit to, in the Account Info tab under your name.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students

Once logged in, all Illinois faculty, staff, and graduate students may deposit work directly into the Illinois Research and Scholarship (Open Unit) collection if it is not pertinent to another collection within IDEALS. If your academic unit has its own IDEALS unit and collection, you may already be permitted to submit. If not, you can request access from the unit or collection manager.

If you would like to set up an IDEALS unit for your academic unit or group, please contact IDEALS staff at ideals@library.illinois.edu.

Undergraduate students

Undergraduates may not deposit work into IDEALS, but undergraduate work may be submitted through the sponsorship of a faculty member as long as it meets the General Deposit Guidelines and Collection Policy.

If you are not a student, staff, or faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Anyone can request an IDEALS account. However, account requests will only be granted in certain circumstances, e.g. if you are not affiliated with UIUC but are collaborating with an Illinois researcher.

If you have permission to view content restricted to a particular unit or collection, logging in will give you access to that content.

Registration is not required to access items in IDEALS and will not gain you access to items restricted to U of I Only or embargoed. To access items restricted to U of I Only you must have a U of I login or be physically present on the UIUC campus. U of I Only items can be requested via Inter-Library Loan (ILL) at your own library or, for most dissertations and theses, purchased directly from ProQuest.

Permissions

Unless otherwise indicated, you do not have to ask permission to use IDEALS materials for your own scholarship and/or non-commercial work due to fair use. If you would like to use materials for commercial work, please contact the author. The IDEALS team does not retain the contact information of the author, nor do we give permission on behalf of the author.
