Natural Disasters and School Emergency Drills

Information about school emergency drills such as fire drills or drills for other natural disasters may not be available online. However, another way to be prepared is to be aware of some of the common natural disasters that occur in Spain:

  • Forest fires: Forest fires occur frequently, especially during the summer months.
  • Flooding: Floods are the most common natural disaster in Spain. These usually occur when heavy rainfall causes rivers to overflow quickly.

The Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte is Spain's Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport. Their website provides many useful resources, and can be translated into English from the "Select Language" drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

These Spanish-language education periodicals are available online and may be searched for relevant articles:

  • Revista de educación: Founded in 1940, this resource is a publication of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport that publishes innovative education research from both national and international perspectives. The journal became bilingual in Spanish and English starting in 2015. Available from 2004 online.
  • Revista iberoamericana de educación: The Ibero-American Journal of Education (RIE) is a publication of the Organization of Ibero-American States or Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos that publishes articles on current educational issues and innovations in the region. Available from 1993 online.
  • Revista electrónica Iberoamericana sobre calidad, eficacia y cambio en educación: REICE is an academic journal that is peer-revied by the Ibero-American Research Network on School Change and Efficiency. It provides a forum for research on quality, equity, efficacy, and change in education conducted in Ibero-America and by Ibero-American researchers. Available from 2003 online.
  • Revista española de pedagogía: This primarily Spanish-language journal is one of the oldest journals dealing with general pedagogical research. Articles from anywhere in the world are published as long as they deal with various elements of educational practice and teaching, that is, pedagogy. Available from 1943 online. Most recent 1 year not available.

Note that the term Ibero-America or Iberoamérica primarily refers to regions and countries in the Americas in which Spanish or Portuguese is predominantly spoken. However, some definitions of Ibero-America include the countries of Portugal and Spain, as the term takes its name from the the Iberian Peninsula in Europe where Portugal and Spain are located.
