Multilingual Electronic Resources for Slavic, East European & Eurasian Studies: EMIS

A guide to 13 databases with significant content in both English and the languages of the region

Overview

Helpful for business and political research, Emerging Markets Information Service (EMIS) (formerly known as ISI Emerging Markets), is a multilingual database of news and information sources about the emerging markets of selected countries worldwide, including all of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, with new countries added every year. EMIS content includes full-text primary news sources, financial data, company information, industry analyses, equity quotes, market information, and proprietary research, analysis, and statistics.

Items date back to the mid-1990s but most material is more recent.

U of I users may access the database as a guest OR register a personal account for a more customized experience (recommended).

Country Research

EMIS is primarily organized by individual country (although it is possible to search for information on larger geographical regions). Each country has a wide range of search options and available materials.

EMIS allows users to create “dashboards,” which is a convenient way to access and organize information for a particular country. By default, a country dashboard will include statistics, news, reports, market data, and sources for the selected country. The “news” section is particularly helpful for accessing recent news on a variety of topics. Dashboards can be further customized by adding additional “widgets” for industries, companies, statistics, and more. Information for Eastern European countries is provided in both English and the major languages of the country in question in most cases.

Screenshot of a dashboard within the EMIS database titled “Poland.” Menu tabs show that the dashboard has several pages: “Overview”; “Key Statistics, Poland”; “News, Poland”; “Reports, Poland”; “Market Data, Poland”; and “Sources, Poland”. The screenshot is currently toggled to the “Overview” page and shows a snapshot of some key statistics and news.
