When performing a search in CEEOL, using diacritics correctly improves your chances of finding relevant results. For example, you will have better results searching for the term "székely" (a Hungarian ethno-historical group) than if you search for "szekely" without the diacritical mark over the first "e.”
For assistance with enabling and using diacritics on your computer, see the Slavic Reference Service's "Fonts & Keyboards" webpage.
The Central and East European Online Library (CEEOL) is an online archive providing access to scholarly journals, e-books, and grey literature from and about Central, East, and Southeast Europe. According to CEEOL, its history is rooted in the annual book fairs of Frankfurt am Main. It was developed by the Frankfurt cultural center Palais Jalta, and its related company Questasoft.
CEEOL is a rapidly growing archive, now offering electronic books and grey literature in addition to periodical articles. As of 2025, in the last ten years the number of journal titles represented has more than doubled, while the number of journal issues in the archive has almost quadrupled.
In addition to performing a traditional basic or advanced database search, users can also browse the archive by subject area, publisher, or source type using the menu options on the homepage.
To search for sources from a specific country, users should select either “publishers, “journals,” “e-books,” or “grey literature” from the top menu and then filter their results using the “Please select a country” dropdown menu provided by CEEOL. An example from the journals page is below.
