This is an excellent source for social science information of all kinds on the World. Political, economic and statistical information is available for each country as well as analytical articles on topical subjects for the various regions of world. Since 1955 Europa World Yearbook was a a standard print resource for international information. 

There is a great deal of information here including population, economic and governmental overviews.  A convenient comparative mechanism for the profiles of different countries is also available.  It can take a bit of time to get oriented to the source but it is well worth the investment.
