What are Video Tapes, Cassettes, and Floppy Disks?

Video tapes, cassettes, and floppy disks store video, audio, and data through magnetic media. Because they are not often used now, they require special equipment to access information on them and to transfer the data.

Digitizing Material on Magnetic Media

For patrons interested in accessing removable computer media in library collections, including but not limited to 3.5" floppy disks, CD-ROMs, and more, library staff should consult Digital Preservation Coordinator Tracy Popp

Media Commons also provides a way to digitize VHS tapes using two items from their Loanable Technology collection, a VHS/DVD Player and the Elgato Cam Link 4K. Patrons can plug the VHS/DVD player into the Elgato Cam Link 4K, then connect them to a laptop running the Elgato Camera Hub and OBS software to digitize their item. Patrons can contact Media Commons for additional information and support for digitizing VHS tapes using this method.
