How to Cite Primary Sources: Autobiographies and Memoirs

This guide will outline how to cite a variety of primary sources in APA, MLA, and Chicago formats

Autobiographies and Memoirs

  • To cite an autobiography or memoir in APA, list the author's last name, first and middle initial, the date of publication in parentheses, the title in italics with the first word capitalized, the city and state of publication, and the published. ex. Last, F.M. (date of publication) Title of book. City, ST: Publisher.
  • To cite an autobiography or memoir in MLA, list the authors name as last, first, then the title in italics with proper words capitalized, then the publisher and year published as follows. Last name, First name. Title of Book. Publisher, year.
  • To cite an autobiography or memoir in Chicago, list the author's full last and first name, the title in italics with proper words capitalized, the city published in, the publisher, and the year of publication. Eg. Last, First. Title of Book. City: Publisher, year.
    • Note the differences in punctuation: this is a key factor in the citation styles.
