What are standards?
Standards are rules, techniques, and conditions for engineering design, industrial practices, units of measurement, terminology, etc. Standards can be mandatory or voluntary. Think of standards as rules for uniformity, size, quality, performance, shape, definition and testing methodology of manufactured products.

ILI Standards InfoBaseThe University Library does not have a subscription through ILI Standards InfoBase, but it is a good database to search for more information. Under certain circumstances, Grainger Engineering Library can purchase standards that we do not have access to. SAE StandardsSAE standards are only available in print and microfiche; no online access. They are located at the Grainger Engineering Library. Please ask the Reference Desk if you need help locating an SAE standard. SAE often reissues their standards as Technical Papers, available through this link. If the standard you are looking for is not available as a Technical Paper, a hard copy may be at the Grainger Engineering Library.

SAE Technical PapersSAE Technical Papers are available online to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign affiliates. Some of the technical papers contain reissues of SAE standards.
