MPAL Exhibits 2024-2025: Singers of Soul

Documents exhibits at the Music and Performing Arts Library during the 2024-2025 academic year.

About This Exhibit

This exhibit is dedicated to the genre of soul music and the highly proficient artists who defined it, pioneered it and brought it into the public eye.  Soul originated from both African American gospel and rhythm and blues.  With its distinctive emotional intensity, call and response numbers between lead and backup vocals (as heard in the Motown Sound) and African American pride at its center, soul has become both a powerful and illustrious genre worldwide.  James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Denise LaSalle, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes and Gladys Knight are just some of the talented artists represented here.
