MPAL Exhibits 2024-2025: American Music of World War II

Documents exhibits at the Music and Performing Arts Library during the 2024-2025 academic year.

About This Exhibit

As of September 2024, only 66,143 American World War II veterans are still alive.  This exhibit honors the service of these veterans with a collection of music composed to boost the morale of soldiers during this era.  Big band, swing jazz and boogie-woogie were favorite music genres of many soldiers.  Popular artists included The Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller, Vera Lynn, Benny Goodman and Bing Crosby.  Crosby's version of "White Christmas" was first performed on Christmas Day 1941 and became a highly requested song on several radio stations the following year, both among soldiers and their loved ones back home.  Some of the most classic songs from this time include "Comin' In On a Wing and a Prayer", "Lili Marlene" and "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B."
