June’s exhibit celebrates the work of composer Philip Glass. Glass’s work is often described as both meditative and hypnotic. His style was heavily influenced by his apprenticeship to Indian musician Ravi Shankar in the mid-1960’s and his later travels to Northern Africa and the Himalayas. Glass introduced these musical styles to Western audiences via his operas, defining the genre “minimal music”: a modern style of classical music with repetitive structures over long periods of time. Akhnaten, Satyagraha and Einstein on the Beach are among Glass’s best-known minimalist compositions.
