MPAL Exhibits 2023-2024: Folk Music of Canada

Documents exhibits at the Music and Performing Arts Library during the 2023-2024 academic year.

About This Exhibit

May's exhibit highlights the cultural diversity of folk music from Canada.  These compositions reflect the experiences, legends and histories of Canada’s original tribes and settlers.  Shanties and folk ballads associated with occupations such as fishing and logging originated in their respective provinces, then became some of Canada’s most beloved traditional songs.  Some of the work of Canada’s legendary folk singers are also included. "The Log Driver's Waltz" (in the External Links section below) is perhaps Canada's most classic modern folk song.  It was inspired by the act of log driving ("birling") resembling dancing.
