About This Exhibit
This exhibit celebrates Black History Month by including a wide variety of Black music, theatre and dance. Spirituals, jazz, rap, traditional West African performances, hip-hop, folk music and opera are just some of the subjects included.
In addition to celebrating Black History Month, this exhibit supplements The 1619 Project by The New York Times Magazine. August 2019 marked the 400th anniversary of Black slaves arriving to America. The University of Illinois Press Blog recommends a number of titles, included at this link.
