Facets are used to further narrow search or browse results by selecting from lists of options listed on the sidebar of the results page.
The options available for narrowing results for cross-collection searches and browsing are more limited. When browsing collections, a key facet is "repository," which will allow you to limit by the library or archives that manages the content in the digital collection. When browsing items or reviewing global search results, facets might include creator name or subject term.
Once users are browsing within a specific collection, results may be narrowed further by selecting options in facets such as Creator, Date, Decade, Publisher, Language, or Subject. The facets available to use will vary by collection. Within collections, facets are typically only available for Digitized Materials collections that contain precise item-level descriptions. For more information about the different types of collections, visit the Types of Collections section of this Libguide.
Within the digital special collections, scroll through each of the facets available to see the options. Each library or archive is represented within the facet called "Repository."
After accessing the results page for a collection with item-level descriptions, one can filter results using other facets. Select from the options in the boxes on the left under each facet. Facets available vary by collection.
The "View All Options" button is available for facets with many options to choose from. Click on "View All Options" button within the given facet (highlighted in the orange box in the screenshot below). A pop out window will appear showing the entire list of options for the collection. The number of options and appearance of the View All Options window will vary by collection.
Once the View All Options pop out window is open, select from the list and click the Apply Changes box. The pop out box will close and users will only see content related to the option selected. If users want to leave the pop out window without choosing an option, click the Close box.
