Course Affordability

This guide is for students seeking options to affordably access course materials.

What are Open Educational Resources?

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials that are available to the public to own, share, and adapt at no cost. These resources have been intentionally created and licensed by their authors to allow for this access. OER can help reduce the financial barriers to education as well as allow adaptability for unique learning situations. Some great general resources to start with are:

The Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) is a search tool to discover open educational resources.

OER Commons is a public digital library of open educational resources.

OpenStax is the world’s largest publisher of open education resources, offering free digital textbooks and affordable teaching technology.

The Open Textbook Library is a comprehensive online database that directs users to a variety of open textbooks.

Mason OER Metafinder (MOM) is an OER discovery tool that launches real-time, simultaneous searches across multiple sources of open educational materials.
