Wolof is part of the Niger-Congo language family and is spoken throughout Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania. It is a lingua franca spoken by individuals even outside of the Wolof ethnic group, and is the most widely spoken language in Senegal with 90% speaking Wolof as a first or second language. Unlike it’s Niger-Congo language family members, however, it is not a tonal language.
