Graduate students may borrow UIUC books for 16 weeks, and renew them up to 10 times. Although an ever-increasing number of journals are available online, we do still maintain a collection of journals available only in print. Loan period for print periodicals varies: typically unbound issues cannot be checked out, and bound journals circulate for 1-2 weeks. You can renew all library materials (except reserves) by logging into your Library Catalog Account (you must create a password the first time you log in).
Books borrowed from I-Share Libraries circulate for 4 weeks, and may be renewed up to 3 times, for a maximum loan period of 16 weeks.
Graduate Students who have a Campus Mail address may request books online and have those books sent to their Campus Mail address.
Books - No daily overdue charge on books, but a non-refundable $10 processing fee is assessed at 34 days and the book is “assumed lost.” At this stage a bill to cover the cost of replacement (minimum of $125) is assessed via the University Bursar's Office. Overdue notices are sent by e-mail. Periodicals: $2 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour, up to a maximum of $50. Replacement cost starts at $300, automatically assessed after 34 days
N.B.: If you are going to be out of town for an extended period, you should return your library books to avoid incurring fines in case one of the books is recalled in your absence.
For a good overview of this process, see the Library's guide to Requesting a Book not at UIUC.
(Note that we can obtain material from many other academic libraries in the state through the regular online catalog, I-Share, without going through ILL. When you obtain a book or journal through I-Share, it is not considered "interlibrary loan," since the transaction takes place within our own online catalog, even though the material may be coming to you from Northern Illinois University, Illinois State, or one of the other 130+ participating libraries.)
Need an article from a journal that the Library only has available in print, but don't have time to come in? We will deliver the article to your email inbox! Use the DocExpress service to initiate a request.
You can also place ILL requests directly through WorldCat. This is a "union" or combined catalog for thousands of libraries that share cataloging records. Note that you can search the title of a journal in this database to find out which libraries own the journal, but to identify articles in a journal, you need to use one of the article databases.
To find dissertations and theses (including many that are available online), use the following:
U of I students can pay for printing with Illini Cash. Print charges will be deducted from your Illini Cash balance.
Affiliated U of I faculty and staff who are not currently registered as taking a class can log in with their NetID to have print charges billed to your account once a month.
