"OECD’s annual publication shows official insurance statistics for all OECD countries including data on premiums collected, claims, and commissions by type of insurance; investments by type of investment; and numbers of companies and employees. The data, which are standardized as far as possible, are broken down under numerous sub-headings, and a series of indicators makes the characteristics of the national markets more readily comprehensible."
By country, headings include: balance sheet and income, number of premiums underwritten (both life and non-life, such as property and causalty)
BLS has statistics on employment in the Insurance Industry:
"This section provides information relating to employment and unemployment in insurance carriers and related activities. While most data are obtained from employer or establishment surveys, information on industry unemployment comes from a national survey of households. The following tables present an overview of the industry including the number of jobs, the unemployment rate of those previously employed in the industry, union membership and representation, data for occupations common to the industry, and projections of occupational employment change."
