Krannert Center Events: 2025-2026 Season

About This Event

Ian Hobson, Piano

Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ian Hobson's first piano recital in Urbana, Illinois with a special solo concert benefiting Sinfonia da Camera. Hobson, the orchestra's esteemed music director and a distinguished pianist, nears completion of his acclaimed cycle of Robert Schumann's complete piano works. Featured on this program is Davidsbündlertänze, a deeply expressive set of character pieces that explores Schumann's contrasting artistic personas-passionate Florestan and introspective Eusebius. Maurice Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit follows, a virtuosic triptych inspired by dark, fantastical poetry. Ondine shimmers with the hypnotic song of a water nymph, Le Gibet conjures a ghostly gallows scene, and Scarbo races through a fiendish, nightmarish scherzo. The program concludes with selected Transcriptions by Sergei Rachmaninoff, showcasing Hobson's technical brilliance and expressive depth. This remarkable evening honors pianistic brilliance and a lifetime of musical artistry.
