Genealogy Resources

A guide to finding genealogical materials at the University of Illinois Library.

Intro

The Library has a vast amount of information pertaining to Illinois history. This page (and its subpages) contains information specific to Illinois counties, particularly county-specific call numbers, subject headings, histories, and atlases. However, you can also find plenty of information about Illinois under the tabs for Using the Library, United States, and Web Resources.

In particular, you can find other county-specific information by looking for:

  • Illinois County Bibliography, which is shelved with 016.9773
  • Browse by call number: Illinois history is shelved in the Dewey range 977.31 – 977.39

To find information about a specific county, look for it in one of the lists below, or use the dropdown menu to browse by first letter. (If you are unsure in which county your city or town is located, please consult this Wikipedia list of Illinois cities.)

On each county's page, we have provided a sample of resources our library holds. You can investigate further using the call numbers and links provided to expand your search.

Three online resources that will be especially useful are:

Illinois Websites for Genealogy

Illinois Genealogical Databases
