Nordic Studies Guide: Finding Articles and Dissertations

Search Tips

You can search for articles several ways using the library website:

  1. For beginning stages of research OR if you already know the title of what you want to read: use the EasySearch box on the Library home page.  Type your search or copy/paste your title into the box (click the gray journal tab first if you are looking for a journal).
  2. For subject-specific research: use the department libraries' webpages or the A-Z Database list to find databases for your discipline.
  3. For tracking down an article/journal you have a full or partial citation for: use the Journal and Article Locator.

Several useful databases have also been linked elsewhere on this guide.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses

Here is an example of a subject search for education dissertations written at Illinois between 2000 and 2004:

  1. In the first search box, type University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and select University/Institution - SCH from the dropdown menu at the right. (Note: The full name of the school needs to be typed out, so "University of Illinois" or "UIUC" will not work.)
  2. About midway down the page, in the box that says "Subject heading (all)," type "Education."
  3. To limit by a range of years, select "Specific Date Range..." from Publication Date
  4. Type in the years 2000 to 2004 in the Start Year and End Year boxes.
  5. Click the Search button.

Dissertations

Dissertations are excellent sources for your own bibliography, as doctoral candidates need to summarize the scholarly literature in their field. Browse these resources to find relevant dissertations.
