Basic Scanning

Using EPSON Scan

Turn on the scanner and open the Epson scanning software on the computer

  • The power switch is located on the lower left-hand side of the front of the device. A green light will indicate that it is powered on. To open the software, search "Epson" in the search bar at the bottom of the computer screen. Double-click on the software and the program will open. When opened, the software will prompt with a quick scan option in "Full Auto-Mode." You can use this or select a mode in the top right drop down menu.
    • Home Mode: Used for quick and easy scanning, provides excellent results for all document types. Can be used for photos, text, and line art when advanced control over image settings is not desired.
    • Professional Mode: This allows the user to have the greatest degree of control of image color and quality. You can manually adjust various settings, such as color, tone, brightness, and so on. If you are scanning film slides, film negatives, or transparencies, you should select professional mode.

Determine the scanning and file save settings

  • While in Home Mode, choose what type of document you are scanning from the drop down menu. This will assist you in establishing your settings. "Photograph" mode is always a good option. **If you are scanning in professional mode for film or transparencies, you will need to select "Reflective or Film" as the document type.
  • Adjust the settings to best fit your document. These settings will sometimes need fidgeting with to best determine what works best for your document. You can check these settings by hitting "Preview"  and a preview of the scan will open in a new window. **Please see "Using the Preview Screen' below for more information.
  • Set the file name, destination, and type (JPG, PNG, TIFF, etc.), click on the icon of a folder next to the scan button at the bottom of the window.

Scan

If you are scanning film slides of negatives, place the items in the provided black grids and place the grids on the scanner.

  • Place the flat item on the scanning flatbed. Be sure to leave some extra space between the item and the glass's edge.
  • Click the "Preview" option once more to ensure the settings are to your liking. Make any further adjustments as you see fit.
  • Press scan and it will automatically save to your file settings.

Using the Preview Screen

The Preview feature allows you to select the area of an image that you would like to scan. You can do this by drawing a box around a previewed image. Images can be previewed in the Thumbnail preview screen and the Full-size preview screen. The former automatically locates and crops the image placed on the scanner, while the latter shows the full scanned area and allows you to manually select the portion of the image you want to scan.

Selecting the Scanning Area

Manually

Click and drag inside the preview image to draw a marquee around the area you want to scan. The selected area will be surrounded by a dotted line.

Auto-detect

Click the Auto locate button to automatically create a marquee around your image and crop out the document table area.

By Target Size

If you know what size you need your final image to be, you can create a marquee with the correct proportions. On the main screen of EPSON Scan, select Target Size under Destination settings, click the page orientation icon to select landscape or portrait.

Troubleshooting

Software will not open.

  • Make sure the scanner is turned on before you open the software. If you attempt to open the software before the machine is completely turned on, the software will not open.

Image is getting cut off.

  • Move the item on the flatbed as needed.
  • Adjust the scanning area on "Preview" window.
  • Try changing the mode or the document type you are scanning on. For example, if you are scanning in "Newspaper," try switching it to "Photograph."

Unclear scan.

  • Adjust the scanning settings such as brightness, exposure, or contrast. This is very much trial and error so it may take some time to find what works.
  • Adjust the resolution of the scan.
  • Try changing the mode or document type.
