2020 Virtual Summer Research Laboratory

A guide for virtual Summer Research Laboratory participants at the University of Illinois Library. It contains information on virtual services, events, access to digital resources, and research technologies.

Catalog Transition

During the summer of 2020, UIUC is transitioning catalogs from the current VuFind Catalog, to a new Primo Catalog on June 18. While work for the transition will occur before the date, the date for full implementation is June 24. After this date, the VuFind and Classic catalogs will no longer be available. More information about this transition can be found here. This page will continue to be updated with information about the catalogs.

Primo Catalog

While the new catalog looks and behaves differently than in the past, most of the same functions you will need as a virtual lab participant will remain the same. You will still be able to perform a basic search, perform a more advanced search with multiple search fields, filter your results by language, publication date, or item type, and view information in item records such as UIUC's holdings for records with multiple items such as journals. You may already have experience using a Primo Catalog. We are including an introductory guide to Primo catalog (see attached file).

How to log in

Select the “Sign In” in the top right

Then, select “University of Illinois Users” and login with your NetID

When you type your search term into the search box, a drop-down will appear. You will want to select “Library Catalog” in order to search materials held by the UIUC library.

Filtering options are along the left side of the page

Selecting “Advanced Search” in the top banner will open more initial search options, such as multiple search terms, language, field being searched, and date range

Item records

Selecting an item will open the item record. This contains additional information about the item, such as subject headings, publication dates, author, and format. It also contains options such as emailing the record to yourself and accessing the permanent link to the item record. Information about the library’s holdings of this item can be found by selecting the holding location under “locations”

In the case of journals, expanding one location will show you each item in the series, if you want to confirm that UIUC has a particular issue

How to request materials

If you are going to be in Champaign-Urbana area or able to access the UIUC library physically, you can request items so that you can pick them up or schedule an appointment with the Slavic Reference Service to access UIUC materials. This is different from Interlibrary Loan, which is a process you will need to do through your own institution. If you are logged in, every available item within a record will have a “request” option.

Selecting this will open a request form, where pick-up location can be selected.

Once sent, you will be notified at the email associated with your NetID when the item is ready for pickup.
