Swahili Literature (Fasihi) is rich and diverse, divided into two broad categories: Fasihi Simulizi ( oral Literature) and Fasihi Andishi. The main feature of Fasihi Simulizi ( Oral Literature) is its oral transmission, passing down stories, poetry, traditions, and live performances from one generation to the next. On the other hand, Fashi Andishi (written literature) is a Swahili Literature category significantly influenced by external factors. The introduction of formal education during the colonial period played a crucial role in developing this category. It shifted Swahili works from oral transmission to being documented in writing. This category includes intriguing genres such as Hadithi (Tales/ Stories), Ushairi Simulizi (Oral Poetry), semi (Oral Traditions), and Sanaa za Maonyesho ( Live Performance).
The main categories of Fasihi Andishi division include Riwaya (Novel), Tamthilia (Play/drama), Hadithi Fupi (short stories), and Ushairi (poetry).
