Graphic science novels cover a broad range of science topics and are located all over the University of Illinois Library system. However, there is a concerted effort at Funk ACES Library to collect graphic science novels, particularly those related to the life sciences. You can search the library catalog to browse graphic science materials and see where they are located, among other details.
Many graphic science materials can be found through using the simple and advanced search in the library catalog.
1. Navigate to the University Library homepage.
2. On that page, you will see a large, orange capital "I" labeled "Library Catalog." Click on the "I" to go to the catalog search.
3. Begin your search by entering your keywords in the search bar at the top of the page. As you type in your keywords, you will notice there is an automatically generated drop down menu with suggested searches.
4. To narrow your results further, including by library holdings, use the "Tweak your Results" menu on the left hand side of the screen.
Searching for graphic science is similar to searching for other books, with a few exceptions. Keyword searching is one way to pull relevant results, as well as using the limiters in the Illinois catalog, which are located on the left side of the screen. If you are looking specifically for graphic science novels at Funk ACES, you would use the "Library" limiter to narrow your results.
One thing that is different from searching for other books in the catalog, is that you can use the advanced search feature, located to the right of the search bar, or Boolean operators (such as "AND"), to include the words "comic," "comic books," or "graphic novels." Oftentimes, graphic science novels have these words or phrases listed in their genre or description and including these words in your search can make your search more effective. At this time, including the term "graphic science" in your search is unlikely to yield many relevant results.
Sometimes, but not always, "GN" will be included in the call number for the item.
