ACS Workflows: Acquisitions

Minimal Marking

Labeling guidelines are to ensure a general consistency and to facilitate handling of the volume of materials coming in to Acquisitions. However, there are some cases within Ricker Library, which will require special handling outside of the norms, in order to preserve the integrity and aesthetic value of the pieces.

Collections that require minimal marking
  • Ricker Library - Ricker Architecture and Art orders will come with notes indicating minimal marking. Upon receipt, the notes will be on the purchase order and should be marked on the blue streamer as “minimal marking” under the location code.
  • S-Collection
  • IHLC
  • Rare Book and Manuscript Library

Minimal Marking:
  • No Barcode
  • Call # in book in light pencil, and only if not covering up or detracting from images
  • No call # on outside of book
  • No stamping on the inside
  • No stamping on the outside

For Minimal Marking and in general:
  • No marking on pages that are entirely images or photos. Find white space on a page which is not covered with art. If unsure, consult with Ricker library.

*Ricker is strongly encouraged to note at the time of ordering for Acquisitions ordering staff if they know something will require minimal marking!

*However, Lea Howard has at times had to make judgment calls. Catalogers are encouraged to use discretion, but are always welcome to ask Lea or George to contact Ricker for clarification.

*George has let Ricker know, though, that only by notifying us ahead of time can we guarantee outright that things will be processed accordingly.
