Mission Statement

The Acquisitions and Cataloging Services Unit creates and maintains content in all formats and languages for all materials that the Library acquires and publishes. We keep the collections vital and current by licensing, purchasing, describing, and organizing to ensure discovery of and access to the Library resources by our users.

ACS Sub-Units

Acquisitions Services manages the work to acquire, pay for, and make available new material for the Library’s collections. All recurring resources with annual renewals and serial cancellations are also performed by Acquisitions Services.

Cataloging Services is responsible for the cataloging, classification, and subject analysis of the library’s collections in all formats and languages which the library acquires and publishes. Cataloging Services provides best practices, training, and services for cataloging and maintenance. Electronic Resources team manages acquiring, licensing, and cataloging of resources in electronic format.

Metadata Services is responsible for the creation and maintenance of metadata beyond the library catalog, including the Digital Library collections and Illinois Digital Heritage Hub, as well as fulfilling the metadata needs of students and faculty, such as selecting metadata standards, organizing and cleaning metadata for research collections and managing personal collections. Additional information and documents may be found on the Metadata Services section of the public-facing Acquisitions & Cataloging LibGuide.
