About the Biodiversity Heritage Library

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is an open access digital library for biodiversity literature and archives. The BHL is a worldwide consortium of natural history, botanical, research, and national libraries working together to digitize the biodiversity literature held in their collections. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Library officially joined the BHL in 2014.

How the BHL Helps with Research

With access to collections from all over the world, the BHL is a fundamental tool to research in any field related to biodiversity. The BHL could help you in your research by:

  • Giving access to materials from world-renowned institutions
  • Offering free tools and services that make searching the collection and saving data easier
  • Hosting symposiums and educational talks related to biodiversity

Tools & Services

The BHL offers a range of free tools and services to support use of their collections and data, including content downloading services, scientific name tools, reference management tools, DOIs and stable URLs, developer and data tools, and altmetrics.
