Illinois Leadership Competencies: Personal/Self: Openness

An effective leader nurtures and improves their own self-esteem, goals, relationships, and values through self analysis and self-growth. This LibGuide provides resources to support the development of the Personal/Self competency.

What is Openness?

“Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others.”

- Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility

Popular thought would leave you to believe that openness is weak, that it is not holding on to your ideals tightly. This cannot be further from the truth. Openness is valuing new experiences and people, and more than that it is knowing how to acknowledge and respond to others views and values and not necessarily changing your own.

In this section, you will find a variety of resources to improve your openness and develop new ways of thinking about how you engage with others. This will become central when you reach the second competency: Interpersonal/Team.
