The Living Sahara: Home

This LibGuide supports the workshop "The Living Sahara" and is meant to help break down the idea of the Sahara being a dividing line between the North and South, and instead being a link and a connection.

Welcome!

We have created this LibGuide to support the workshop "The Living Sahara: New Horizons in Teaching Africa and the Middle East". We will continue to build it over time. We hope that this guide is of use to you!

Overview

Africa is an incredibly diverse continent that crosses approximately 30 million square kilometers, represents about one-fifth of the Earth's landmass, and encompasses over 50 countries. Within Africa, Sub-Saharan African -- known as Tropical Africa -- houses indigenous black populations. There isn't a clear boundary separating North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and the latter has been a melting pot where indigenous regions have interacted with Christianity, Islam, and other religious movements from the East and West.

The countries bordering the Sahara and parts of central and southern Africa possess valuable reserves of resources including oil, uranium, gold, and diamonds.
