Ethical Considerations

Ethics highlighted in dictionary.Due to its rapidly evolving nature, generative AI’s social, legal, and ethical impacts and effects are still developing and will continue to develop with each iteration. However, there are some consistent concerns over the influences and implications of generative AI technology, ranging from the user’s experience and privacy to the impact on employees and the workforce. Before using generative AI tools, please consult with your supervisor, instructor, and publishing journal’s generative AI tool policies. Generally, by using these tools in your work, you agree to all the terms and conditions involved with the technology.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Digital Risk Management provides a Generative AI Overview page, which includes guidance for instructors and students. Additionally, the United States Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology offers further information on AI Risks and Trustworthiness.

Campus Note: The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Technology Services department provides a list of approved resources on their Generative AI Resources page. Any application not on their list is not approved and should not be used with University solutions or devices.
