Energy Efficient Schools Topic Hub

Resources for making school buildings more energy efficient and incorporating energy efficiency and renewable energy into school curriculum.

Case Studies

This section lists schools across the country that have implemented energy efficiency principles in designs or retrofits including regionally appropriate alternative energy. This section also identifies schools that have integrated energy curricula.

These case studies show how modifications of energy policy and consumption within a school can not only save money, but also improve the learning environment for students and working environment of staff.

Integrating energy policy in schools is a multi-step process that begins with involvement of all staff (administration, maintenance and teachers), parents, students, and occasionally the school board. These include the following steps:

  • Recognize a need. Financial incentive, soaring energy costs, and scarce resources have forced schools to examine alternatives and energy policies.
  • Develop a policy for energy consumption in the school.
  • Determine alternative energy sources, modification possibilities, and replacements.
  • Conduct an energy audit of the school.
  • Implement appropriate conservation strategies.
  • Install energy efficient heating, cooling and electrical appliances as well as sensors.
  • Communicate regularly with staff and teachers.
  • Reassess the program, results, and process regularly.
