Google for Academic Research

A guide on techniques for researchers to increase their skills with Google's various search options.

What is Google Dataset Search?

Similar to Google Books and Google Scholar, Google Dataset Search allows you to search for datasets across different platforms. If you're familiar with data repository, Google Dataset Search operates in the same way. Although some of the functions may not be as extensive as a data repository, this can still be a useful tool if you're searching for open-access dataset for your research topics.

Searching in Google Dataset Search

1. Go to Google Dataset Search

2. Currently, Google Dataset Search does not support Advance Search like Google Books or Google Scholar, so you would have to use the simple search bar. Because of this, we recommend you keeping your keywords and search terms short so that the system can parse through them correctly.

3. After hitting Search, it should bring you to this page which shows the results page of different datasets that are available. Generally, these are all open-source datasets, so they should be free and available for your use. Each dataset should contain description of the datasets, where it is located and different licensing information, and even metadata info!
