Research Steps for Client-Based Projects

This guide is for students in classes and co-curricular organizations working on client-based consulting projects

Check Industry Reports

These resources can help you understand the broader conditions in which your client and its competitors work as well as whether / how emerging trends for the industry will impact your client's operations. NOTE: there may not be a defined industry yet for new products or services.

Depending on what you are looking for, there may be other resources that can help--ask me!

BCC Research (reports on medical & surgical devices, cell biology, pharmaceuticals, health maintenance, engineering, photonics, safety & security, instruments, information technology, advanced materials, plastics, chemicals, semiconductors, nanotechnology, water membranes, fuel cells & batteries, food tech, energy, manufacturing, and environmental)

  • Type one or two search words at the top in the "Search for Market Research" box. Navigate through a report using the Contents on the left; highlighted numbers show how often your keywords appears in a section. The Appendix has Company Profiles. You can also "Search in this Report" at the top.

Emerging Markets Information Service (EMIS) (reports and news on all broad industry categories, categorized by NAICS code; report sources include Grand View Research, Mordor Intelligence, and BIS Global Industry Reports)

  • On the welcome page, under "Hi, EMIS subscriber!" click on "Login as Guest," unless you really want to register a personal account.
  • Type keywords at the top in the "Search" box. You'll get an "Overview" page; click on Reports, News, Companies, or Statistics tabs at the top, as needed. Use Country/Region and Date Range on the left to apply limits as needed.

Frost & Sullivan (reports on aerospace & defense; automotive & transportation; business & financial services; chemicals, materials & nutrition; consumer products; economic analytics; electronics & security; energy & power systems; environment & sustainability; healthcare; industrial automation; information & communication technology; measurement & instrumentation; security; and supply chain logistics)

  • Type keywords into the "Search here" box.  Refine the results list by using the options on the lower left for Region and Published Year.
  • Inside a report, scroll down to read, or navigate using the TOC (Table of Contents) option in the upper left corner.

Gartner (reports and reviews of technology solutions in communications, services, transportation, healthcare, automotive, energy & utilities, and industrial manufacturing markets)

  • Click the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign link to log in.
  • Type keywords in the Search box at the top. You'll get a mixture of different articles, reports, and videos, all produced by Gartner, and all designed to inform technology decisions. Magic Quadrants rank vendors, Hype Cycles profile current and emerging uses of technology.

IBISWorld (reports on all broad industry categories, categorized by NAICS code)

  • Type keywords in the box at the top that says "Search by industry, keyword, company or code." Within a report, use the options on the left to navigate to different sections. Call Prep Questions at the bottom of the "Chapters" list provides a good set of interview questions.

Procurement IQ (reports offer B2B purchase advice on hundreds of equipment and services categories)

  • Type keywords in either "Search" box, or click on All Reports under "Popular Links" on the right to browse by NAICS category.
  • Within each report, pay special attention to the Business Requirements tab, which suggests criteria for evaluating potential suppliers. This could be a helpful perspective, whether your client is the potential buyer or the potential supplier.

  • Alternatively, in the menu at the top of the homepage, click on Reports, and then select Industry & Market Reports.  Type keywords in the Search box, and Filter results with the options on the left, as needed.
