The Jupiter String Quartet is a particularly intimate group, consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, Liz Freivogel (Meg’s older sister), and cellist Daniel McDonough (Meg’s husband, Liz’s brother-in-law). Together for over 20 years, this tight-knit ensemble is firmly established as an important voice in the world of chamber music and exudes an energy that is at once friendly, knowledgeable, and adventurous. With both a strong connection to the core string quartet repertoire and a deep commitment to music written by contemporary composers, Jupiter Quartet concerts accentuate and illuminate connections between programmed selections.
The Jupiter Quartet has presented complete cycles of the Bartók and Beethoven string quartets. They have presented commissioned quartets from Nathan Shields, Stephen Andrew Taylor, Michi Wiancko, Syd Hodkinson, Hannah Lash, Dan Visconti, Kati Agócs, Mark Adamo, and Pierre Jalbert. Krannert Center audiences will have an opportunity to hear Singing Land, a new work by Su Lian Tan and Robin Wall Kimmerer this season.
As artists-in-residence and faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Jupiter Quartet members maintain private studios and direct the chamber music program. They place a strong emphasis on developing relationships with future audiences through educational performances in schools and community centers, believing that chamber music is one of the most effective ways of spreading an enthusiasm for “classical” music to new audiences. In addition to their teaching at the U of I School of Music, the Jupiter Quartet has recently presented masterclasses at Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, and Peabody Conservatory, as well as the Aspen Music Festival, Encore Chamber Festival, and Madeline Island Music Festival.
