This book can be insightful in its focus on adults with dyslexia, as many books about dyslexia tends to focus on the cause and how it affects school age children.

After his son was diagnosed with dyslexia, Pulitzer Prize winner poet Philip Schultz was finally able to understand his own childhood struggles with education. In this memoir, Schultz writes about his childhood with then undiagnosed dyslexia, his struggles with reading as a child, and how he became an award-winning poet.

Written by Dr. Maryanne Wolf, a developmental psychologist, this book looks at how reading have changed the human brain. This book discusses writing and reading in the large scale, such as the effect of reading on the human brain since the invention of writing, to the small scale of children with dyslexia and reading’s effect on their brain. Insightful and approachable, Proust and the Squid is an excellent book for those interested in the scientific side of reading and dyslexia.

While individuals with dyslexia might struggle understanding written words, this book by Drs. Brock and Fernette Eide argues that dyslexics also have unique skills and ability enabling dyslexics to excel despite their learning disability. This book uses both the Eide’s expertise in neurology and learning disorders but also recent research, case studies, and first-hand accounts of those with dyslexia.

The Percy Jackson series, written by Rick Riordan, is about the half-human half-Greek god, Percy Jackson, being flung into a world of myth and monsters while trying to stay alive. All of the half-bloods, the term for children born of a Greek god and a human, are dyslexic with ADHD to aid in their survival. Riordan had his half-blood characters have dyslexia and ADHD due to his own son having both diagnoses. There are five books in the series, along with additional materials, as well as two other series set in the same world.

Rose and Maggie Feller share only two things in common, their hatred of their stepmother and shoe size. Standardized tests soon separates the two sister’s lives even more, with Rose’s high scores allowing her to attend prestigious universities and Maggie being unable to take the tests due to her dyslexia and is forced to work minimum wage jobs and be dependent on her father and sister. Eventually, Maggie overstays her welcome and is forced to hide in the Princeton University Library where she discovers a love for reading.

This series, written by Henry Winkler, is based on the writer’s own experience of being dyslexic growing up and his difficulties in school. The book series follows Hank Zipzer as he navigates middle school and life. The series was adapted into a children’s television series by CBBC (Children’s British Broadcasting) and was set in London instead of the book’s original setting of New York.

A new teacher notices the creative troublemaker and with his help, Ally is able to see herself past her dyslexia and that she is more than a label.

Adam has struggled with letters and reading since kindergarten, the beginning of the Alphabet War. This book follows Adam’s struggles with reading from kindergarten to the fourth grade, as Adam grows more frustrated with reading until he is finally able to get help and be able to read on his own.

Recently diagnosed with dyslexia, Brian still struggles in school and with bullying as he tries to hide his dyslexia from his friends and schoolmates.
