The announcement of the European Green Deal in December 2019 occurred very shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted global health and the global economy.  Some controversy has arisen over whether green initiatives should continue to be prioritized in Europe's economic recovery.  However, the EU has taken the pandemic as an opportunity to design a "Green Recovery," continuing to use climate initiatives to shape recovery efforts in various policy areas such as transportation, biodiversity, and agriculture.
