Course Description

Course Syllabus
This course introduces the central concepts, methods and theoretical orientations of the discipline of sociology. Sociological imagination is illustrated by recent theory and research. Topics include: socialization, social construction of everyday life, research methods, culture and media, deviance, stratification, groups and networks, poverty, gender, race, health and society, capitalism and the economy, authority and the state, science and the environment, social movements.

Course Goals

Introduce the sociological imagination and learn how sociologists use this concept to analyze various social issues.
Introduce examples of the interaction between structure and agency in shaping individual and group experiences.
Introduce examples of various forms of social inequality.
To think critically about what may appear to be the familiar or seemingly given aspects of social life.
