This exhibit is dedicated to the life and work of Professor Emeritus Ben Johnston. Professor Johnston taught composition and theory at the University of Illinois School of Music from 1951-1986. In addition to his dedication to teaching, Johnston was also known for his compositions in microtonal music, sonatas, toccatas and string quartets.
Professor Johnston recieved several honors, awards and grants for his exemplary work, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Illinois, two commissions from the Smithsonian Institution and a recent induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Professor Johnston passed away on July 21, 2019.
