Abstract:
The article describes the design of Carol Ross Barney of the James I. Swenson Civil Engineering Building at the University of Minnesota. Said building is used as a teaching and learning tool for its students. The core of the civil engineering curriculum is illustrated with the use of locally available materials, the exposed structural systems and the adoption of stormwater management techniques. The design which reinforced pedestrian circulation patterns of the school and visibility into the laboratories is described.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the four proposed designs for the canopies of the Chicago Light Rail in Illinois. The design proposed by architect Carol Ross Barney incorporates horizontal canopies supported by unobtrusive vertical elements. Another design concept suggests the use of two sets of triangular and sail-shaped canopies which may consist of fabric. The fourth proposed design comprises of ribbon sets on 10 posts.
