International Studies Research Lab Orientation: Home

A guide to the UIUC Library, Federated Searching, SFX, and Current Awareness, created especially for visiting scholars during the International Studies Research Lab.

Welcome

Welcome to the International Studies Research Lab at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign! The Summer Lab will be held online from July 1 - July 31, 2020.

This guide will serve to orient visiting scholars with the multitude of resources and technologies available at the library. Database search tools, IAS collection information, and resources for research are also available on the International and Area Studies webpage. For more generalized information about our library, such as hours, maps, tours, etc., visit the Learn website for an Insider's guide to the library.

Other Information:

Note: With summer comes construction, in all forms, on the UIUC campus. Please take note of the various ongoing road construction and building projects, should you be driving around campus.

Wireless access at UIUC

This year, visitors will receive temporary NetIds and Passwords that will provide even greater access to collections. More information will be available as the Summer Lab draws near.

Here is some information on Internet Access on and off Campus (Note: These annotations were composed by Technology Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Please note that, because this year's lab is being held digitally, most of these instructions need not apply to those living outside of Champaign-Urbana.

IllinoisNet
IllinoisNet is the primary wireless network on campus. It is a WPA2 secure wireless network that will allow you to access online campus resources. In most cases, once you properly configure your laptop, tablet, or phone to connect to IllinoisNet, you will be able to automatically connect to IllinoisNet anywhere on campus without having to log in again.

IllinoisNet_Start
IllinoisNet_Start is a network that you can use to easily configure your laptop, tablet, or phone to connect to IllinoisNet. You only need to use IllinoisNet_Start once. After successfully completing the configuration process, you will be able to connect immediately to IllinoisNet, and you will no longer have to use IllinoisNet_Start.

IllinoisNet_Start can also be used by visitors to campus to gain limited, temporary access to our wireless network.

UIUCnet
UIUCnet is a less-secure on campus wireless network for students, faculty, and staff. UIUCnet will require you to log in with your University credentials every time that you connect to wireless. If you are frustrated by the constant need to log in every time you want to use wireless, we recommend connecting to IllinoisNet instead of UIUCnet.

UIPublicWifi
This less-secure network can be used by the public to connect to wireless. Students, faculty, and staff should not use UIPublicWifi. In addition, visitors to campus should use the IllinoisNet_Start visitor connection instead of UIPublicWifi.
