This case study published by EPA's Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) provides detailed information about the use of the Triad approach, and the technologies and strategies used at the Former Cos Cob Power Plant Site in Greenwich, Connecticut. The Triad approach streamlines site investigation through systematic planning, dynamic work strategies, and real-time field-based measurements. At the Cos Cob site, a preliminary conceptual model (CSM), developed based on the review of existing data from previous investigations, indicated that only direct contact with contaminated soil and sediment would pose potential threats to human health and the environment. The field-based approach expanded the sampling and analytical coverage at the site and a dynamic work strategy assisted in the delineation of contaminants at the site, especially polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

In 1998, under the sponsorship of the New Hampshire - Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), Green Mountain Laboratories, Inc. (GML) and the USEPA agreed to carry out a Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) project to evaluate the effectiveness of GMLs Bioremediation Process for the treatment of PCB contaminated soils at the Beede Waste Oil/Cash Energy Superfund site in Plaistow, New Hampshire (hereinafter referred to as the Beede site). The treatment process involved inoculation/augmenting of the PCB bulk microbial inoculum and nutrients, and allowing the microbes to aerobically degrade the PCBs. The bulk inoculum was produced on-site by the developer using animal feed-grade oatmeal as the substrate, shredded pine needles that provided certain specific co-metabolite compounds, nutrients and a proprietary consortium of microorganisms capable of degrading the PCBs to their eventual endpoints - carbon dioxide and mineral halides.

VeruTEK successfully removed PCB-impacted fuel oil contamination from soils at a compressor station in Clendenin, West Virginia using a surfactant flushing process. The treatment consisted of injections of VeruSOL®, VeruTEK's patented biodegradable and plantbased surfactant and co-solvent mixture, which solubilized PCB-impacted oil from site soils into an immobile, fixed emulsion that was then removed for treatment.
