The Toxic Art Supplies in Schools Act requires the department to develop lists of art or craft materials which cannot be purchased or ordered for use in kindergarten through sixth grade. These lists are distributed by the State Superintendent of Education to all school districts in Illinois, as well as making the lists available to preschools, child care centers, and other businesses and organizations which involve children in the use of art or craft materials. Law governing the safety of arts and crafts supplies used in Illinois schools

Requires that all art materials be reviewed to determine the potential for causing a chronic hazard and that appropriate warning labels be put on those art materials found to pose a chronic hazard. Furthermore, LHAMA applies to art materials that are intended for use in the household or by children after November 18, 1990. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) self-inspection checklist for visual and performing arts programs in schools.

The NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) program helps employees, employers, and unions recognize and control health hazards in their workplace. For on-site evaluations, findings are published online (without company or employee names) in NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Reports. Reports are searchable by keyword, state, industry category and subcategory, or health effect.

In 2003, 6-year-old Jarod Bennett died at his elementary school when a folded cafeteria table that was being stored fell on him. In response to this accident the Ohio Legislature passed HB 203 which became law in March of 2006. It requires the director of health to “provide
minimum standards and procedures for inspections of schools to identify conditions within the school building and grounds that may be injurious to the safety or health of building occupants.” OAC 3701-54-02. In 2007, the Ohio Department of Health developed OAC 3701-54, a set of rules required by HB 203. In addition, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is required to “establish the school health and safety network” under which “each
public board of health (LDH) shall inspect each public and nonpublic school building and associated grounds within its jurisdiction at least once each year.”
