This article, published in the Winter 2024 NFPA journal, reviews the numerous safety concerns surrounding lithium-ion batteries as well as research efforts to address them. At the bottom is a list of links to completed, ongoing, and proposed NFPA Foundation research projects related to EVs and lithium-ion battery safety.

The October 2023 summit hosted by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service produced this Stakeholder's report, which contains a review of the problem presented by lithium-ion battery fires, a list of current practices for responding to EV and Energy Storage Systems fires, and recommendations for future action.

"In May 2024, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), along with its research partners, conducted a series of tests to determine the contamination produced by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and its impact on first responders and their personal protective equipment (PPE). "

This research project was conducted by a partnership of the Fire Service Research Institute and the FDNY, focusing on e-Scooter fires and their implications when started in the home.

This safety report from the National Transportation Safety Board examines four electric vehicle fires, identifies safety issues, and makes recommendations to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, electric vehicle manufacturers, and organizations that represent or operate first and second responder training programs.
