Classics Series Gateway: Essay Collections

Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen Welt (ANRW) is a work of international cooperation in the field of historical scholarship. Its aim is to present all important aspects of the ancient Roman world, as well as its legacy and continued influence in medieval and modern times. Subjects are dealt with in individual articles written in the light of present day research. ANRW is organized as a handbook. It is a survey of Roman Studies in the broadest sense, and includes the history of the reception and influence of Roman culture up to the present time. Approximately one thousand scholars from thirty-five nations are collaborating on this work. The articles appear in German, English, French or Italian. British School at Rome Studies builds on the prestigious and long-standing Monographs series of the British School at Rome. It publishes both definitive reports on the School's own fieldwork in Rome, Italy and the Mediterranean and volumes (usually originating in conferences held at the School) on topics that cover the full range of the history, archaeology and art history of the western Mediterranean.

Volumes in this series examine important topics in the history and civilization of ancient Greece and Rome. Many of the books focus on a watershed period in classical antiquity - such as Athens in the fifth century BC, or Rome in the transition from Republic to empire - in which key events generated important changes and developments in all aspects of the society, including politics, the economy, warfare, and the arts. Each volume includes newly-commissioned essays that examine a particular aspect of the topic. Offering a synthesis of the literature on the topic, the essays also pose new questions and suggest new paths of inquiry for both students and scholars. Librarian's note: most of UIUC's holdings lack a series title. We will address this omission and work to make this series easier to search.

Companions to Ancient Thought are intended particularly for students of ancient thought who will be reading the ancient texts in translation but approaching them with the analytical skills of modern philosophy and with an eye to their contemporary as well as their historical significance. Each volume is devoted to a specific field of philosophy and contains discussions of relevant ideas of all the major philosophers and schools. The books do not attempt to provide a simplified conspectus of ancient views but rather critical discussions of the central and therefore representative arguments and theories. A particular feature of the series is its exploration of post-Aristotelian philosophy, which has been shown by recent scholarship to be both philosophically exciting and historically important.

The series responds to an increasing awareness among scholars of the ancient Mediterranean world that phenomena of culture, religion, and politics cannot be isolated, but must instead be studied in relation to each other. Moreover, since the work of the History of Religions School, it is clear that such phenomena cross boundaries of languages, countries, and religions. To render a truly fruitful examination of Greek literature in the Imperial period, the time has come to acknowledge its deep entanglement in Roman politics and to investigate parallels in contemporaneous religious texts. The new series, launched by an international team of experts with a strong interdisciplinary orientation, provides the necessary platform for such pioneering research. Both Jewish and Christian texts as well as those dealing with Greek and Roman religion and philosophy will share the same standing. The series also welcomes studies on other religions and their connections in the Greco-Roman world.

The A.G. Leventis Foundation was established in May 1979 as a result of provisions made by Anastasios G. Leventis, who died in October 1978. From the beginning, the aim of the Foundation has been to support educational, cultural, artistic and philanthropic causes in Cyprus, Greece and elsewhere. In 1997 the Foundation endowed a chair for a biennial Visiting Research Professorship in Classical Greek to be based in Classics. The purpose of the Chair is to contribute to the understanding of classical Greece, its literature, history and people. One of the main responsibilities of the professor, while in residence, is to arrange a conference resulting in publication.

Mnemosyne Supplements has existed as a book series for about sixty years, providing a forum for the publication of now almost 400 scholarly works on all aspects of the Ancient World, including inscriptions, papyri, language, the history of material culture and mentality, the history of peoples and institutions, but also latterly the classical tradition, for example, neo-Latin literature and the history of Classical scholarship. Works published include monographs, critical text editions, commentaries, critical bibliographies and collections of essays by various authors on closely defined themes. A number of volumes of the Mnemosyne Supplements series are published within the subseries History and Archaeology of Classical Antiquity and Late Antique Literature.

The series provides students and scholars with a representative selection of the best and most influential articles on a particular author, work, or subject. No single school or style of approach is privileged: the aim is to offer a broad overview of scholarship, to cover a wide variety of topics, and to illustrate a diversity of critical methods. The collections are particularly valuable for their inclusion of many important essays which are normally difficult to obtain and for the first-ever translations of some of the pieces. Many articles are thoroughly revised and updated by their authors or are provided with addenda taking account of recent work. Each volume includes an authoritative and wide-ranging introduction by the editor surveying the scholarly tradition and considering alternative approaches.

Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy is a volume of original articles on all aspects of ancient philosophy. The articles may be of substantial length, and include critical notices of major books. The first volume was published in 1983. The founding editor was Julie Annas, who was in charge till 1995; ten annual volumes were published under her editorship, and three supplmentary volumes. C.C.W Taylor was editor from 1993 - 1998 and edited six volumes. David Sedly took over in 1998, and edited eighteen volumes. Since 2000, OSAP has been published twice yearly, in summer and winter. Brad Inwood took over as editor in 2007 and Victor Caston in 2015.
