UNESCO - Ramsar ConventionThe United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has an established list of Wetlands of International Importance. Beginning with the Convention held in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, wetlands around the globe have been so designated, in particular in relation to their importance as waterfowl habitat. Sites are routinely added, and there are currently more than 2400 such sites.
