Illinois Leadership Competencies: Community/Society: Global Competence

What is Global Competence?

"We are the world. We are the children. We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving. There's a choice we're making. We're saving our own lives. It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me."

--Michael Jackson and the USA for Africa Choir

Though this quote may seem cheezy, the message is clear, we should not think of ourselves as one nation or one society. In fact, the world itself is global community, and it is important to respect this community with our actions. A strong leader will strive to maintain global perspectives, and not fall into the us and them pithole.

This competency strives to develop your respect for various cultures as well as ability to work with people from varying backgrounds. This will not only be important in a college campus, but will be a crucial part of being a citizen of the planet.
